Luna Adelaide sat in moon-bathed fields of daisies. She pulled one after another from the earth, inspecting each for telltale flaws. Satisfied with their frost bitten petals, she dug her fingers into the dirt. She pushed her hands down past the fragile flowers and navigated through the knotted roots of the willow at her back. She sighed out slowly, her breath clouding before her. Goosebumps rose on her skin and she straightened her back momentarily before letting her shoulders drop limply.

Battle Hymns      I
I heard you softly singing battle hymns
As you carefully stitched yourself back together
You pulled the thread that bound your heart to your chest
And smiled as it bruised your flesh

I watched you silently crying one night
Your tragic need for blood finally satiated
You sat amongst polariods of your best days
And wondered who you used to be

I held your hand tentatively as we walked together
We passed through cemeteries and school yards
And held hands as if committing a heinous sin;

Hilary I'm the girl who stumbles.

I'm the one who wakes up every morning dreading the day to come because I know I'll be planning out every step, every word until I am back home and can recede into books.

I'm the girl who carries her whole world in her purse to keep herself grounded. Sometimes I still sleep with my lights on in a pitiful attempt to trick myself into believing I'm not spending another night alone.

I try my hardest to live between reality and fiction. I find my place in life is a carefully measured space between the two worlds. There I sit, torn between making my own story and getting lost in someone else's.

sweet release lies an arms reach away
hidden subtly in a jacket pocket
seductively calling, chanting my name
and every second brings me closer
and closer to reaching over and


broken glass lies on the floor
scattered recklessly and i can't
help but imagine it digging into flesh
somewhere hideable and there's nothing
to stop me from picking a piece up and


the bottle is still full, its seal unbroken
but every awkward conversation and
broken sob brings it closer to my lips
and without its bitter embrace, i may lose

you know
some people
depend too much on capitals
and punctuation
as if they could define the heart
of the matter
by their very existence
but really
they are just fences
defining boundaries of vision
that may not always
be needful
or necessary
or best
especially when the heart
is trying to share
what cannot be seen

the normal realm of beauty;
constellations
in the meticulous wash of stars,
the feeling of early dawn sunlight
bathing your skin in delicate warmth
and the moment right before our lips
touch, when your eyes shut
and your breath
hitches.

but i didn't pray for love
when i was a child.
i yearned
for another sunny hour
a perfect beach day
and for the gentle trill of summer
to spill into
the rest of the year.
i didn't wish for you
right before i closed my eyes
but i am now ever hunting
for that feeling.
you see, my sweetheart,
i have always been wanting
you
simply, you were known

while hers accentuate swollen lips

last time it was her hair
a blonde mess of curls that
distracted me from a body
that could have been cast
from your exact frame.
but this time it is her eyes –
without that same softness

call it karma lying on the bathroom floor
the comedown is still worth the high.
behind closed eyes, my mind reels
as unconsciousness threatens
to claim all thought once again.
your voice swims through the chaos
of tangled and vicious noise
as my stomach churns and i let myself go
hoping that it will purge you from my system as well.
i cannot cope with this hopeless feeling
the fleeting moments i am close to you
that i ration and savour for weeks after
have begun to leave me shaken and hungry for real contact -
for honest skin on skin contact to steal my breath away.

lying on the cold stone floor

i realise i don't have enough money
to keep this high up.
